Folk/Singer-Songwriter
Lucy Dacus – “Limerance”
Recommended If You Like: Mitski, Laura Marling, Cate Le Bon
One of two brand-new singles shared by revered singer-songwriter – and one-third of boygenius – Lucy Dacus, the piano-ballad “Limerance” serves as a preview of Forever Is A Feeling, Dacus’ first album since her supergroup took home three Grammys. Backed by orchestral strings and delicate ivory-tickling, the acclaimed lyricist sings of an unrequited infatuation with sardonic specificity – “high as a kite while he’s playing GTA / Why is he so good at this game, it should be cause for concern.”

Babe Rainbow – “Like Cleopatra”
Recommended If You Like: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala, Allah-Las
After signing with countrymen King Gizzard’s label, Aussie psych rockers Babe Rainbow have shared a cosmically-groovy new track, “Like Cleopatra,” the lead single from the forthcoming Slipper imp and shakaerator (out April 4 on (p)doom Records). With funky guitar vamps, hand claps, cowbells and enjoyably half-baked lyrics, the song finds the group comfortably loose but in the pocket on what’s a danceable and playlist friendly track.

Electronic/Pop/Hip Hop
Girl Talk, T-Pain, Yaeji – “Believe In Ya”
Recommended If You Like: Thundercat, Jungle, Silk Sonic
Mashup maestro Girl Talk has corralled jocular, frequently-Autotuned polymath T-Pain and the pop singer-DJ-producer Yaeji for the breezy, feel-good single “Believe In Ya.” Combining head-spinningly disparate influences – ‘80s-disco, French house, Kool & the Gang, etc. – the song is as impressively complex as it is intuitively catchy.

Folk-Punk
Pigeon Pit – “bronco”
Recommended If You Like: Violent Femmes, Pixies, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
From their new album, crazy arms, “bronco” finds the rambunctious, DIY folk-punkers Pigeon Pit at their raucous-yet-nuanced best, deploying vivid lyrics, sneakily infectious melodies and deft dynamics on a song that feels both anarchic and harmonious.

Shannon & The Clams – “Wax & String”
Recommended If You Like: The B-52’s, Jefferson Airplane, Count Five
“Wax & String,” an addition to the deluxe release of Bay Area garage-rock mainstays (and upcoming JME Soundstage Series headliners) Shannon & The Clams’ critically-beloved 2024 record, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place, is a potent dose of hard-driving psychedelic rock with fuzzed-out guitars and haunting vocal harmonies that are sure to bubble your lava lamp, while the song’s cacophonous instrumental interlude threatens, ever-so-subtly, to light your beanbag chair on fire.

Marshall Allen – “New Dawn” (feat. Neneh Cherry)
Recommended If You Like: Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Johnny Hodges
A crucial member of the innovative, iconic and otherworldly ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra since 1958 – and its leader since 1995 – saxophonist and composer Marshall Allen’s place in the jazz cannon is assured. Two days after his 100th birthday, Allen began recording New Dawn, the first solo record that bears his name. The title track, featuring vocals by Neneh Cherry, is a gorgeous torch song dedicated to musical transience and transcendence.

Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts – “Big Change”
Recommended If You Like: Allman Brothers Band, Little Feat, Rolling Stones
With “Big Change,” Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts offer up a fairly straightforward rocker, with big, crunchy open chords and an equally objective message – “Big change is coming… “Might be bad, might be good.”
