Orange Park’s own Jordan Blackburn is back with his second record, the five-track follow-up to last year’s Abnormal Hues. The rising singer-songwriter and producer blends timeless quiet storm R&B with sleek electronic soundscapes on Jordan Blackburn, reintroducing himself to listeners with purpose.
Where Abnormal Hues had a brooding, unlucky-in-love edge that Blackburn’s press materials chalk up to high school angst—a reminder of the artist’s enviable youth—his self-titled EP doubles down on his debut’s sensuality while grabbing hold of a new self-assurance. Even Jordan Blackburn’s cover art reinforces this unapologetic confidence, with its closeup shot of a “JB” belt buckle just below bare skin.
Blackburn continues to develop as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist across Jordan Blackburn, which he composes, performs and produces in its entirety. Guitar and piano flourishes glimmer on “I Like” and “Fetish,” respectively, while Blackburn’s bold production makes “Party” itself sound buzzed and complicates the conflict of extensive closer “Deny.” And his collaborators further deepen the listening experience: Abnormal Hues-featured rapper Edbwoy! returns to call out fakes on “Who Are You?,” while Sasha Love contributes lyrics to romantic opener “I Like.”
“Each song came from a different place,” Blackburn says of his new record in a statement. “I’m just focused on making music that’s true to me and where I am in my life now.”
