Perfume Genius – “It’s a Mirror”
Recommended If You Like: Japanese Breakfast, The Magnetic Fields, Jessica Pratt
The popular, and ever-adventurous, indie artist Perfume Genius has shared “It’s a Mirror,” a hazy, alt-country leaning single, and the first preview of a new full length, Glory (out March 26 on Matador). Sonically, “It’s a Mirror” evokes the freedom of a road-trip (windows down, hand carving through the breeze), while lyrically encouraging the listener to forego the paralysis of indecision and, perhaps, embrace opportunities to hit the road.

Mobley – “No Exit”
Recommended If You Like: Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Bartees Strange, John Legend
A multi-hyphenate nonpareil, the Austin, TX-based writer-filmmaker-producer-musician Mobley has shared “No Exit,” the second single from the forthcoming full length We Do Not Fear Ruins (out April 23rd on Last Gang). Groovy, understated verses fulminate into anthemic hooks, as the song makes use of soft-loud dynamics, futuristic sonics and an alt-rock posture.

Tamino – “Sanctuary” feat. Mitski
Recommended If You Like: James Blake, Thom Yorke, Bon Iver
“Sanctuary,” a soaring, acoustic-leaning ballad and third preview of NYC-based Belgian-Egyptian singer-songwriter Tamino’s forthcoming Every Dawn’s a Mountain (out March 21 on erēmia/Communion Records) features guest vocals by Mitski. The former tourmates teamed up after Tamino shared a demo, inspired by Mitski’s catalog and written with a collaboration with the indie megastar in mind.

Mogwai – “Fanzine Made of Flesh”
Recommended If You Like: Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros, Radiohead
From their eleventh studio album, The Bad Fire, their first since 2021’s As the Love Continues, which went to number one in the UK, “Fanzine Made of Flesh” finds the ever-experimental Glasgow-bred post-rockers building an eerie fortress of distorted guitar, whirling synths and effects-enhanced vocals, stealing away for a song about vulnerability and regret.

Flipturn – “Burnout Days”
Recommended If You Like: The War On Drugs, Backseat Lovers, Lunar Vacation
Just a couple weeks ago, Jax-based, Fernandina-bred indie rockers Flipturn made their late night television debut, performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The band was there to promote its new record, Burnout Days (out now on Dualtone), the title track to which finds the group showcasing the kind of sheen and polish acquired via tens of dozens of sold-out live performances and months of studio time. It’s an energetic, stadium-rockin’ song, which – given their current trajectory – is more than likely to carry Flipturn to bigger and bigger venues.

Local/Indie Pop
Visitation – “New Age to the Bone”
Recommended If You Like: Woods, Dick Stusso, Foxygen
One of my personal favorite, and perhaps overlooked, local releases of the last few years came courtesy of Visitation, the arty, indie-pop project of Jacksonville multi-instrumentalist Ray Heekin. On “New Age to the Bone,” Visitation’s first new music since 2022’s Computers, and the first to feature keyboardist and singer Ali Youngblood (Black Kids), Heekin presents a glammed-up paean to infatuation, with sassy finger snaps, atmospheric reed blasts and haunting harmonies.
