The latest single from local darkwave band Limo Scene is available as a digital download or “3.5-inch floppy diskette.” Whether the latter format being offered is satire, it is a good indicator of the band’s neon-lit ethos.
Like their previous releases (“Dynatac Cellular,” “Low Cost Cobra” and “Camera + Chrome”), the four minutes of “Angelic Three” is a conscious blending of analog and digital, toggling the excited promise of ‘80s tech hardwired into the present grid of 21st-century poly-tech, interlinked existence. Propelled by a drum machine thump and anchored by some dense bass synth, “Angelic Three” evokes the dourer electro-mopery of 1989-era Depeche Mode, arguably when that band were at their most potent. Cryptic lyrics (“It’s hard to define / but it’s different than mine / invisible hand / supply and demand”) are delivered with a (naturally) disaffected delivery that only deepen the overall clinical (if not hermetically-sealed and sterile) dispassion that seem to fuel Limo Scene and keep them on the synth-goth track.
What conceivably began as kitsch idea for the duo of Mason and Paul — who steer Limo Scene — soon veered into the winningly subversive; check out their deadpan 2023 appearance on local morning TV coffee-klatch show First Coast Living, a performance that surely left the hosts and home audience baffled by the straight-faced weirdness and icy lo-fi techno music of the band. Regardless of the Limo Scene’s motivations, “Angelic Three” and its cold-as-ice, dancefloor-ready sound, proves the band has leveled up and you, dear listener, are better for this progression.
