As far as indie accolades go, who’s having a better 2024 than Katie Crutchfield? Well, maybe MJ Lenderman. But certainly no one’s having a better second decade of the 2000s.

Four years after making her mark with the indie-folk opus St. Cloud, the singer-songwriter seemingly found a new gear as Waxahatchee as she settled into the retro country soundscapes of 2024’s Tigers Blood, one of the most critically-adored records of this year. The lead single from Tigers Blood, “Right Back to It,” it should be noted, featured Lenderman on guitar and background vox, and is arguably responsible for ushering in the North Carolina songwriter’s current moment.

Seven months later, Crutchfield is back — with Lenderman on guitar, no less — and she appears to have found her twangy stride, returning to the alt-country fore with the slowburn, acoustic-driven single, “Much Ado About Nothing.”
