NYC indie band Bodega performs with Siichaq at The Walrus on May 3.
NYC’s BODEGA are a playful blend of angles. They have loads to say about the current state of the world and how ‘we’ as whole interact with it. All this commentary is packed into biting Devo-esque bites of angular guitar pop nuggets. Their new album, ‘Our Brand Could Be Yr Life,’ out April 12 via Chrysalis Records, is an exploration of dusting off the old, completely blowing the top off it, and reassembling the dust into a creation that has broken on your own rules.
They approached the record like how a director might remake one of their old films which meant writing a number of new songs and developing old ideas in new directions. It is a concept album about the current corporate mentality of underground/indie rock, where the band simultaneously desecrate and celebrate a certain indie rock cannon, hoping to redeem its’ ‘fall from grace’ like foolish missionaries who inherited a stained formal tradition that needs to change in order to become meaningful again.
