Local “shark rock” trio Bonnethead have shared their second single, the vibrant “Dive.” Released in late October, the track follows February’s “Night Time,” the debut tune from the Nick Garcia-led project.
Singer-songwriter Garcia, also of Lost Club, Dog Apollo and Weekend Atlas, is front and center on “Dive,” unspooling its woozy shoegaze riff before guitarist Alex Henriquez jumps in with the yang to his yin. Garcia’s breathy vocals stand alone in the verses, while bassist Bert McCaskey fills them out on the choruses: “Let go / Find me in the undertow,” they harmonize, evoking Alvvays in words and music alike.
Garcia’s Lost Club collaborator Julian Rodriguez lends drums to the track, adding to the exhilarating sense of propulsion already created by its distorted-guitar double helix. Garcia and McCaskey’s vocals grow more forceful as the track glides along, though in true shoegaze fashion, the lyrics themselves are enshrouded in effects, i.e., a challenge to make out. There’s no mistaking the pull of these hooks, though.
Bonnethead also shared a stripped-down, percussion-less performance of “Dive” via Instagram, gifting listeners a closer look at what makes the track tick. The trio have cited the aforementioned Alvvays, as well as DIIV and the Japanese House among their influences.
Keep up with Bonnethead right here.
