Jacksonville Band Ducats Taps the Vein of Lo-Fi Indie Rock on New Single, “Stent”

Since announcing his arrival on the North Florida music scene with 2022’s Glob – a seven-song, self-produced collection of primitive garage rock and other convention-averse soundscapes – Trent Holton has continued to expand the oeuvre of Ducats while adding pieces to the project. From the psych-rock fidelity of “Uggo Druggo” to the textured wallop of shoegaze on “Painless” the former Chicagoan, alongside band members Ryan L’Heureux, Rachel Pendergrass and Brian Kim, has proven himself well-schooled in the decidedly informal pedagogy of DIY music as Ducats (pronounced duck-ets) has released nearly a half-dozen singles.

Ducats will unveil its debut full length before year’s end. And on their latest single, “Stent,” the band taps the vein of the lo-fi indie sonics of the early 2010’s. Though it kicks off with a barely literate tom-snare intro, a boisterous fill introduces “Stent” as a layered, dare-I-say demure (yes, this review will be dated before it’s published) bit of indie rock that hearkens back to the dour-surf sounds of Clash-The-Truth-era Beach Fossils. Grey but certainly not tintless, the song is a relatively spirited addition to the Ducats catalog.

The band’s new full length is due out in November. Both the title and specific release date are TBD (follow the band for updates). Ducats plays the Walrus with noisy Miami art rockers Mold! and Duval shoegazers Siichaq on Saturday, September 7 (info here). “Stent” is available on all streaming platforms.
